crkvadugopoljeAt the beginning of the 7th century, Croats  settled the area between the rivers Zrmanja and Cetina, while the today's region of Dugopolje was located to the east. Either the long and sheltered field at the northern side of the Mosor as well as mountain pastures naturally favoured the establishment of settlements. The old Croatian was composed of eleven districts, of which the district of Klis with its centre in the unconquerable fortress between the Kozjak and the Mosor encompassed Dugopolje.

Cave Vranjača

unutrasnjost_vranjace2

The Vranjača cave is situated centrally at the foot of the northern part of the Mosor mountain. It is possible to reach the cave from Split taking the asphalt road over Dugopolje leading to Kotlenice and the hamlet Punde (25 km), and from there another 300 meters over the macadam road to the cave's entrance. For long have local residents known about the entrance to the cave(so called Atrium),but the other bigger part of cave was discovered by land owner Stipe Punda passing through a narrow passage going after a wounded pigeon
Another great researcher, professor Umberto Girometta, greatly contributed to the propagating of the cave as amiracle of nature which he discussed in newspapers, journals and scientific publications.

Turning place for cars was established, the cave was furnished with concrete stairs from the entrance to the bottom of the cave's atrium, an iron handrail was produced, the passage from the atrium was extended, the cave was electrified, pine trees were planted in the cave's surroundings. The opening of the cave was celebrated on 15 December 1929.

siga1After experimentally sounding out the cave in 1934 and 1935, Girometta found out that it had been inhabited in ancient times and that the first cultural levels (earthenware, osseous fragments etc.) date back to the early Neolithic. There is also rich cave fauna. After World War II. the cave was mainly visited by mountaineers and small tourist groups until, in 1970, it was again furnished with electricity. The cave was put under the care of Šumsko gospodarstvo (Forest Economy), today Hrvatske šume (Croatian forests), and was legally classified geomorphologic natural monument in 1963.
